Prof. Peter Neary 1950-2021
It is with immense sadness that the EEA received the news that J. Peter Neary, a founding member of the Association and past President, has passed away at the age of 71.
Peter was an eminent international trade economist and instrumental in the development of trade research in Europe. He was also a much-valued member of the trade community in Europe. Energetic and insightful, he was a constructive presence at any conference and a great mentor to junior scholars. His warmth and wit were much loved and admired, and his dinner toasts true highlights.
Peter was very much involved in the birth of the EEA, and continued to be an important Fellow. He took on multiple leadership roles for the EEA over the past 35 years, and always with dedication and wonderful humour. He was a permanent face at our annual congress, presenting his latest research, giving invariably constructive feedback to others, and joining in all gatherings. He will be sorely missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
On behalf of the EEA, I send our heartfelt condolences to his family.
Silvana Tenreyro,
EEA President 2021
